Carbon Dioxide absorbent (eg soda lime)

Soda Lime

Carbon dioxide absorbers, typically (although not necessarily) consisting of soda lime, are supplied in order to remove exhaled carbon dioxide from breathing systems in anaesthetic machines / workstations.

Medical-grade soda lime includes an indicating dye that changes colour when the soda lime loses its carbon-dioxide-absorbing capacity.  Barema and the AAGBI are working to rationalise the number of dyes used, such the only absorbents to be used in anaesthesia will be the white to violet option, bringing the UK into line with the vast majority of countries throughout the world.
